You can check out the awesome pic Adam Schwabe took of me and Mr Burton in this piece by Ron Nurwisah. Thanks to Mr Schwabe and his iPhone otherwise I'd be out of luck in getting a pic. (My mom loves ST:TNG and pretty much freaked when she saw the picture!)
The night was pretty awesome. LeVar Burton is an absolute gentleman, shaking everyone's hand, asking each person's name. He gladly took photos with everyone who asked, patiently waiting until flashes went off and images stabilized.
In fact, there's a funny story to this picture.
Unlike the one I took of
Adam "in full on nerdgasm fanboy mode," there wasn't much natural light when I went up for my turn. Luckily, the Twitter crowd were very gracious to use the flash on their cell phones and cameras to provide a mobile lighting crew. <3!
I think a lot of public figures could learn from LeVar Burton. He was genuinely excited to be in Toronto, and to be in front of the Twitter crowd. He asked the crowd if everyone knew each other, and when we replied we hadn't, he yelled in excitement that he had created a chance for people to get each other. He also polled us to see who watched Reading Rainbow and his eyes lit up to see the sea of hands. This was the generation of kids that watched him, now all grown up, he noted.
And, now, to be in the Ampersand is extremely surreal. I have written for the
Financial Post Weekend Edition, but to be on the other side of news... hugging LeVar Burton... I may need a second.
;)
Update: And now I'm
shown on City playing with my iPod Touch. Awesome!
